UMKC Scofield Hall

Kansas City, Missouri

PROJECT SCOPE. Restoration of the tile roof and integral copper gutters on the first building donated to become the Kansas City University, and now Scofield Hall of the UMKC campus. It was built by W.S. Dickey a fairly notorious and disliked businessman of early Kansas City history, but a very wealthy man. He and William Rockhill Nelson were intense rivals in the newspaper business and in early politics. It was named after Carleton F. Scofield, first chancellor of the school when it combined with the University of Missouri System in the early 1960's. The house and grounds were donated to Kansas City by William Volker who had purchased the surrounding property first and then upon Dickey's untimely death in 1931, he purchased the house. The entire structure was fireproof, and the roof deck was concrete slab which required a "double-batt" system upon which the tiles could be fastened.
