A Quarter Century of Building Kansas City
Garden Roofs (also called rooftop gardens) are a very popular choice in Kansas City. They can sustain shrubs, trees, pet areas, walkways and benches with their complex structural support, irrigation, drainage and root protection layers. We understand that garden roof requirements are unique, both structurally and financially. Whether discussing emergency situations or the long-term return on investment for your facility, we'll provide an accurate assessment of the roofing construction, suitability and condition of your roof for your operational needs.
Attractive plaza roof areas offer pedestrians an outdoor place to gather and enjoy fresh air, bright sunshine or beautiful views. Plaza roofs provide practical solutions for maximizing space, by building decks over sloping, difficult or uneven surfaces. We understand that each building has its own unique look and style, developed with purpose and passion. We share that passion, by helping to bring that same uniqueness and style to your plaza area. Simple or complex, our mission is to assist the building owner, architect and contractor in producing a smooth plaza surface.
Long popular in Europe, rooftop garden (green roofs) and plaza rooftops have begun to appeal to businesses, cities and even homeowners as an attractive way to promote and support the environment, while solving the same challenges met by conventional roofs. Urban green roofs create rooftop parks and landscapes, using shrubs, trees, flowers, grass, patios, walkways, trellises, firepits and benches, without disrupting infrastructure. They take a neglected space and make it highly versatile.
There are two types of garden roofs (also known as green roofs). Intensive green roofs are essentially elevated parks. They can sustain shrubs, trees, walkways and benches with their complex structural support, irrigation, drainage and root protection layers. Extensive green roofs support a lighter mixture of hearty native ground cover that requires little maintenance. Extensive green roofs usually exist solely for their environmental benefit, and don't function as accessible rooftop gardens.
Plaza roofs and protected membrane roofing are breakthrough contributions to flat roof technology. They incorporate an upside-down approach to insulating the roof, by placing the insulation on top of the waterproof membrane, to improve the membrane's effectiveness and the insulation's efficiency.
This advancement was made possible in large part by the use of Styrofoam™ extruded polystyrene insulation, whose closed-cell, water-resistant qualities have proven to be a key component in Plaza Membrane Roof (PMR) systems. Styrofoam-extruded polystyrene insulation is installed beneath fabric and ballast, or paver ballast, and above the waterproofing membrane. It helps keep the membrane at a constant temperature, and minimizes the harmful effects of freeze-thaw cycling, ultra-violet degradation and mechanical damage — the most likely causes of premature roof failure. Thermal warranties are available from Dow. Full system warranties available are from membrane manufacturers. PMR roof assemblies building owners meet the goal of sustainable construction including contributing to the achievement of LEED™ points.
